In June 2021, the community of Grand Forks did not approve a referendum vote for a new K-8 building on the site of the existing Valley Middle School. The District found that community members desired to keep neighborhood elementary schools and to understand current facility challenges to understand the District’s needs. The District hired ICON to perform a facility assessment and assist with long-range planning. The highest need identified in the assessment was Valley Middle School and its aging structure, challenging grade organization, and lack of accessibility. The District, in partnership with ICON, educated the public about these challenges through third-party surveys, community meetings, and social media. The survey found that 64% of community members would support building a new Valley Middle School.

The GFPS School Board called for a vote of $79 Million in May 2023 to build a new Valley Middle School and complete safety and security upgrades in several schools across the District. The vote passed with 64% approval. The school is expected to open in the Winter of 2025.
